Chapter Nine

Just after two o’clock that afternoon, Logan and Cody were on their way to the very playground where he’d run into CJ Clark and his sons.

He glanced at Cody in the rearview mirror, buckled into his booster seat, flying his cowboy figurine through the air. Time to put all he’d learned from CJ into practice. His head was full of his old friend’s advice and Logan hoped he didn’t get any of it wrong—or mixed up.

When he’d picked up Cody from his and Annabel’s cabin just a few minutes ago, his first thought when she opened the door was how badly he wanted to kiss her again. How physically attracted to her he was. He’d also been aware that he wanted her to join them on their outing—and that had nothing to do with lust and everything to do with wanting to be in her company. Wanting her near.

Because he still had feelings for her? Or so he’d have backup if he messed up with Cody and handled something wrong?

Probably both. But today was a boys’ day out and at least he had a little more confidence in himself to be on his own with a seven-year-old now that he had CJ’s tips tucked away.

The problem was that CJ couldn’t be very specific, and Logan had specific questions. Like, let’s say Cody falls off the jungle gym and starts crying. Does he run over and kneel down and scoop him up into a hug, console him? Does he tell him that’s just a little scrape on his knee and that he’s fine and give his hair a ruffle?

CJ hadn’t been able to answer that the way Logan wanted. With a definitive: do this. CJ had said Logan should do what felt right in the moment and that he’d only know what that was when and if it came up. He’d know the difference between a hard fall and painful injury versus disappointed wailing that he’d fallen and that he really was fine. Logan wasn’t so sure he would.

And when Logan asked CJ how to respond if Cody asked a question he had no answer to, CJ chuckled and had said, Old buddy, take it moment by moment, day by day. No one has these answers. Only you will when you’re in the thick of it. Just go with it and do your thing.

Logan’s thing was hanging to a bucking bull for eight seconds, signing autographs, depositing big checks into his bank account—actually, Savannah handled that—and living the good life after working two jobs for a few years when he was coming up to pay those early competition fees and the health insurance premiums since he was required to prove he could cover very costly trips to the hospital.

But now his thing involved being someone’s father. This living, breathing, walking, talking bundle of energy and heart. And Logan was all too aware what he meant to Cody. As his hero, as the father he’d just discovered he had. He had to be very careful how he spoke to the boy, how he acted.
